Bagua Zhang is one of the primary internal systems of the Chinese Kung Fu. It is based in part of the eight trigrams
from I Ching. Its theory seeks to explain the nature of the universe and the relationships between the energies
therein. “Tung Hai Chuan” developed this art in the middle 1800s by combining open hand movements he had
mastered in his youth and the circle walking methods that the Taoist Monks used reciting mantras. He created this
style of Kung Fu based on fighting with mobility. He first named it Shuan Chang, Turning Palm, though he later
changed it to Pakua Chang, now called Bagua Zhang.
Most Bagua Zhang techniques originated from Northern Chinese Kung Fu. Employing the strategy of change, it is
a circular style utilizing body turning and twisting movements. The footwork coupled with the logical body
mechanics and ingrained patterns, allows the martial artist to set up and execute techniques while rapidly changing
movement, direction and alignment. Bagua Zhang is known for its highly evasive footwork, powerful palm strikes,
snake-like body movements, and lightning fast combinations.
Bagua Zhang can be a highly effective style of martial arts with the proper instruction and hard work through
training. Forms help condition the student in maintaining alignment and focus while in motion. Forms also help
develop to use the power of whole body behind every movement. Once the practitioner of Bagua Zhang has grasped
the basic fundamentals, the forms will enhance this understanding. The training must be well rounded in both
internal and external principles. This will develop the student into a highly skilled practitioner with profound insight.

In the Bagua Zhang, it is recognized that skill in self-defense provide little without health because without health,
skill will not last. Also, health without skill in self-defense is not martial art and provides few options should a
physical confrontation arises. Both elements are essential to the full and complete development of any martial art
practitioner.
